At Home Remedies for Fleas - There are lots of homemade flea remedies on the internet. It is always nice to have a cheaper alternative than splashing out on commercial products, but be careful that any homemade flea remedy you use is appropriate. There are many natural ingredients that can be harmful to cats and also those that can spark off allergic reactions for humans - so exercise caution.

How good are Home Flea Remedies? - How effective homemade remedies are could depend on the individual who is using it. We are all different and some things will work for one but maybe not another. If you do have fleas in the home, yard or on your pets be sure to exterminate them, as well as repel them so any infestations are cleared as soon as possible. Some common homemade flea remedies are below..

Ideas for Humans: Sprays can easily be made with essential oils (eucalyptus, rosewood, lavender, peppermint, tea tree, cedar, citrus or lemongrass - all smells said to repel fleas) and water. Place in a container over night and then use like a perfume spray the next day. To keep the fleas off at night, a homemade flea trap can also be made, but this will involve sleeping with a light on (not ideal unless youíre a 10 yr old scared of the dark). A bowl of hot water mixed with liquid soap and a lamp placed next to it should encourage fleas to jump in the water to drown (ensure an adequate amount of soap is used). For flea bites, you can use tea tree oil.

Home Remedies for Fleas in Home

Ideas for the Home: Regularly vacuum the carpets, under the furniture, floor boards and even curtains if necessary and dispose of the vacuum bag straight afterwards. Borax and diatomaceous earth can be added to carpets before vacuuming - although ensure that all pets and children are out of the house whilst this takes place. Borax could be irritable to the skin so donít let children get home and roll around in it. Coax the fleas into a homemade flea trap like the one described above. For the Yard: Borax and diatomaceous earth can be spread on the ground/lawn as one of your remedies. Be sure to remove all pets and children whilst this is done.

Ideas for Pets: The size, age, and type of pet should all be taken into consideration with homemade remedies. Always check with your veterinarian before making homemade flea remedies for you pets. Some say that garlic and onions can be detrimental to your pets, and others say that they may be okay in small doses - but itís always wise to get a professionalís opinion. One natural thing that will help your pets repel fleas is a healthy nutritional diet. Ensure you pet is building a strong and adequate immune system (you could enquire further with your Veterinarian). The odour your petsí skin emits can attract fleas if they are unhealthy so look at ways to remedy this. You could add natural ingredients to your petís food and drink, each day as one of your homemade flea remedies. Large quantities of raw garlic are said to be toxic to cats, but a minimal inclusion in the diet is said to be a good repellent to fleas - as is Brewerís yeast. Large dogs can be given larger doses of the same. Another idea is to be place a tiny amount of apple cider in the petís water bowl (good for their immune system). Natural sprays are good homemade remedies - these can be made from lemon and water or white vinegar and water, flea collars (not for cats or kittens) with essential oils (geranium, lavender, cedar to name a few) and flea dip baths (using peppermint or rosemary) are all also reported as good flea repellents for house pets. Chamomile near the catís basket and Fennel near the dogís basket are also meant to be good repelling remedies. Herbal shampoos which include lavender, eucalyptus lemon or geranium are meant to be good for dogs as is a dry shampoo consisting of bicarbonate of soda with a few drops of lavender oil massaged into the fur before brushing off. However, with any of the above remedies, always check with your vet first.
